SRUC | CIEL

The SRUC Animal & Veterinary Science Research Group provide CT scanning (computer tomography) services to livestock breeders, to other research organisations and for veterinary diagnosis. In addition to a modern CT scanning unit and a team of specialist staff based in Edinburgh, CIEL investment has enabled the provision of a mobile CT scanner service, for use in a wide range of applications by farmers, researchers and external organisations across the UK.

Benefits of CT Scanning (Sheep)

CT scanning allows more accurate identification of the best animals in a flock for breeding. It assists delivery of rams to the commercial sector that will make a real difference to product quality and profitability. Used in partnership with ultrasound scanning, in a 2-stage selection programme, CT scanning offers the opportunity to accelerate the rates of response to selection for improved carcass quality in a cost effective way.

Impact

Helping to improve the efficiency of production systems and product quality. Increased precision of assessment and introduction of novel traits to genetic improvement programmes. Faster genetic gain, better breeding objectives.
